- fee be charged for the copying of this program. Dealers
- or other commercial users will need to register with
- the author before re-selling this software.
-
-
-
- The idea of operation is very simple: Rather than waste
- paper printing 1-sided text files or program listings,
- BOTH scans the file and prints all the odd-numbered pages
- on one side of the paper. The paper is removed from the
- printer, flipped over and re-inserted for the even-numbered
- pages to be printed. BOTH's output resembles a regular book
- with only half the number of sheets used for a one-sided
- listing. I'd suggest using at least 20 pound paper for
- the best results (thin paper allows the print on the reverse
- side to show through). BOTH permits the use of either cont-
- inuous form or single sheet paper and does a limited amount
- of page formatting if called upon. For program listings, etc.
- a line-numbering utility is available. Those of you with
- 80 - column printers should take note that adding the line
- numbers increases the width of each line by five characters.
-
-
-
- Instructions:
-
- For ease of use, REName BOTH150.COM to BOTH.COM, then
- you can type either:
-
- BOTH and press <Enter>.
-
- or
-
- BOTH [Drive:][\Path]Filename.ext <Enter>
-
- If you simply type BOTH,
- you will be prompted for the filename. Drive:\Path\Filename.ext
- are all supported. BOTH will check the file before printing to
- determine # of lines, line width and if form feeds are embed-
- ded in the text. Text files with and without form feeds can be
- printed with BOTH.
-
-
- Page formatting
-
- Many .DOC or other text files (such as those produced by the
- print to file facility in WordStar) use blank lines to format
- the document. If you wish to print one of these files using the
- original formatting, be sure to specify the TOTAL page size
- (normally 66 lines for 8-1/2 x 11 paper with the printer set
- to six lines/inch) and then answer NO to the "AutoFormat" prompt.
- One very hand use of BOTH is to create reports generated by
- various word processors printed on both sides of the paper.
- To do this, use the word processor to "print" the document to
- a disk file, then invoking BOTH to convert the file to a
- paper document.
-
- BOTH does contain a utility which performs limited page formatting
- on a file if requested. If "AutoFormat" is selected, BOTH sub-
- tracts two lines from each page to be printed and replaces these
- lines with a blank line, then a line containing the page number and
- file name. This is why there are two document sizes given in
- the file analysis screen (the first showing # of pages without
- "AutoFormat", the second with).
-
- If your document contains embedded line feeds (CHR$ 12), BOTH
- will assume the file is pre-formatted and will print the file
- "As-Is". To change the page layout in this type of file, you
- will need to remove the line feed characters (this is one
- place where EDLIN comes in handy!).
-
- Be sure your printer is on-line before running BOTH. Due to
- the number of printer types, no printer settings are handled
- by this program. Defaults are shown in capital letters.
-
- NOTE: Unless you specify to BOTH that your printer is limited
- to an 80-char column width, BOTH will move the text 3 chars to
- the right when printing the odd-numbered pages to allow for
- binding space. If you do specify an 80-column maximum width,
- BOTH will NOT shift text but WILL truncate any lines that exceed
- 80 characters in width! Check the statistics shown for your file
- before printing.
-
-
- Under normal operation, use BOTH to print the odd pages first,
- then reverse the paper and feed it through the printer again to
- print the even pages on the other side.
-
- Any comments, bug reports or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
- A $10.00 donation is requested from users of this program.
